Gena has over ten years experience in secondary school headship, including an inner city comprehensive school in Salford, and has used this expertise to good effect in her roles as DFE adviser, schools’ adviser, improvement partner and improvement development officer.

She spent two years as a National Strategies Regional Adviser, two and a half years as a DFE adviser on the Greater Manchester Challenge team, supporting and challenging LA School Improvement Teams and schools to achieve the Department for Education (DfE) targets, building capacity for organisations to implement quality assured processes, developing strategies for improving teaching and learning, and leadership and management training across all levels.

She has worked on the DFE Free Schools programme and is currently employed on the Academy programme as an education adviser and academy broker. She has been Ofsted trained and has recent experience of leading Ofsted inspections.

Recent  contracts include work as a school effectiveness adviser for Torfaen LA in South Wales, supporting the LA to develop the use of data and pupil progress tracking across all schools and providing support and challenge to build capacity in under-performing schools, particularly in English at KS4 and 5.

She has also worked as a School Improvement Partner with six schools across Stoke and St Helens, providing support, challenge and school improvement development for teachers, governors and school leaders and securing high quality outcomes and has just been contracted by the St Helens Headteachers to provide advice and support for English and leadership from September 2011.

As a consultant for ASCL she has provided high quality support and advice for schools before or subsequent to an Ofsted inspection with impressive outcomes and as a school improvement adviser she has worked with schools in Tameside and Stoke to develop subject self-evaluation and develop middle leadership capacity.

Until April 2016 she advised the Stoke College Academies Trust with two secondary and a primary academy and two Studio Schools, The Rural Enterprise Academy, a Free School in Staffordshire and a Catholic Academy in Stoke-on-Trent

She maintains her commitment to securing high quality outcomes for children and young people.  This commitment underpins her interactions with local authority officers, governors and headteachers where she is able to provide appropriate and effective challenge and support, training and development. She has worked effectively with schools in challenging circumstances in a range of contexts, securing improved outcomes and the development of leadership systems, self-evaluation, development planning and effective use of data. She has undertaken training for teachers, governors and LA officers in securing improved outcomes, developing leadership skills and the improvement of teaching and learning. Gena has excellent oral and written communication skills and highly proficient ICT skills. She is an experienced school governor in primary, secondary and sixth form provision.

She is a skilled project manager who plans well and delivers to time and quality.
